Ten Ways to Unwind From the Workday

We all sometimes fall into the habit of carrying our work with us home; if not physically, then mentally. We may spend considerable time ruminating on work projects or talking about work with a family member or friend. Although there is nothing wrong with that, carrying our workload home could affect our health and wellness.

Unwinding after work is part and parcel of a healthy work-life balance. Taking time to relax after work not only reduces stress but also can help you restore your energy and focus for what comes next. Rest is not wasted time; it is vital to sustain the energy, perspective, and motivation you need to produce good work. If you, like many others, wonder what you can do after work to reduce stress and relax, consider a few activities you can put to good use.

Turn Off your Phone
One of the biggest traps people fall into is checking their phone after work. It’s all too easy to check work emails or open an app and later discover that you have spent hours scrolling. To keep the temptation at bay, turn it off or set it to airplane mode; this lets you focus on what matters.

Write in a Journal
You may have shut off your laptop, but the worry gremlins or stressors might still creep into your mind. To quiet down your thoughts, consider writing in a journal. This not only eases the stress of what’s worrying, but also gives you a place to vent. There’s no right or wrong way to do that, and you don’t have to write complete sentences; the key is to release your thoughts in a safe space to calm your mind.

Go for a Walk
Time outdoors is never wasted time. A walk allows you to connect with nature. The key is to walk without your phone; you can also have a friend or family member accompany you. Some prefer the silent walking trend to connect with themselves. Whatever you choose, remember this is an opportunity to help you unwind.

Take a Bath
A hot shower or a bath is a great way to relieve stress. It also gives you a great opportunity to connect with your senses. You can also choose to fill your tub with hot water and add bath bombs or soap bubbles for a more relaxing experience.

Light a Relaxing Candle
Candles fill the atmosphere with a beautiful ambience and aroma, especially if they are scented. They can also relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and support overall mental well-being.

Make a Cup of Tea
A warm cup of tea soothes the senses, especially after a stressful day. Even in the warmer months, curling your hands around your favourite mug can calm you down. After all, we can extract joy from little things in life by the intention we bring to it.

Meditate
In our mile-a-minute world, our thoughts are always racing for what’s next. Meditation can help us focus on the present. It helps us be more purposeful with our thoughts and connect more deeply with our emotions.  Several apps can help you meditate, including Headspace, Calm, and others.

Stretch Out
Sitting at the office all day long can make your muscles feel stiff. Stretching out can reduce stress and make your body feel more relaxed. You don’t have to do strenuous exercises; a few simple, gentle stretches can go a long way in reducing tension and promoting relaxation.

Get Lost in a Book
Reading is an effective way to escape everyday worries because it gives your mind a chance to get absorbed in a story. Reading can also help your body relax and unwind by slowing your heart rate and creating a calm environment that helps you fall asleep.

Listen to a Great Playlist
Music is a great way to relax. Putting on your favourite playlist while doing chores or relaxing can make you feel better. Upbeat songs can lift your spirits after a difficult day, while slower music can create a peaceful atmosphere and help you relax.
