Trevor Dandy: Reimagining Handcrafted Shoes

As we transition to the great outdoors and return to our social lives, we surely need influential footwear designers to reimagine our outlook toward what’s trendy.

As a designer, Dandy often brings fresh ideas and new perspectives to his work, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and inspiring others to think outside the box. Dandy’s unique and original designs captivate people’s attention and encourages them to think about doing more things ingeniously.

We spoke to Dandy, the name behind TRBOA handcrafted shoes, to enquire about the brand, its creative process, and the bold concept behind its design.

What is the concept behind TRBOA?

The meaning of TRBOA is – “TR- is for my initials and BOA stands for ‘beyond ordinary accomplishments.” The concept of the TRBOA line of handmade shoes, sandals, and boots is to provide quality made shoes that are affordable to individuals who want to make a fashion statement.

The concept behind the brand is the desire to bring men’s footwear to the customer in an ingenious way that’s unique and affordable, and could be utilized for a long time.

What is unique about TRBOA shoes?

Our intention is to create footwear that is unique and stands out from others in the market. Even though it has the characteristics of a shoe, it possesses features that are not readily associated with a regular shoe. It could be utilized for both casual and formal attire. The sandals are made without side panels, allowing air to circulate freely under the soles of the feet, allowing them to breathe. The concept supports the sockless phenomenon or trend.

In your opinion, what makes leather shoes stand out?

Leather is a highly durable material that can withstand wear and tear, making leather shoes a long-lasting investment. They are known for their classic, timeless style that can elevate any outfit. The natural texture and grain of leather also give shoes a unique and distinct look. Additionally, leather shoes are breathable and mold to the shape of your feet, providing a comfortable and snug fit. They come in a variety of styles from dress shoes to casual sneakers, making them versatile enough to wear for a range of occasions. Minimum maintenance is required, but they can be polished or conditioned to maintain their appearance and extend their lifespan. Overall, leather shoes stand out for their durability, style, comfort, versatility, and longevity.

As a designer, who inspires you the most?

I wasn’t inspired by any specific shoe designer. However, I had a very unfortunate experience while attending a seminar in Las Vegas. I was wearing a pair of shoes that were made by a well-known shoe designer. One foot of the shoe’s sole came off as it was glued on, creating a big inconvenience for me as I was already late for an appointment. I was so annoyed that I ended up buying a replacement shoe that would have a more durable shoe life.

I began researching and traveling to various countries to look for shoe factories that would meet the design demands I envisioned. My quest for better, affordable, and comfortable shoes culminated in the creation of TRBOA.

What is your greatest strength as a designer?

A good shoe designer should always have the customers’ interests in mind, considering that they are the ones purchasing and modelling the creation of the designer. The customer should be enamored by the designer’s creation as it showcases his level of creativity. I would say that my greatest strength as a designer is my ability to conceptualize what I envision. I am always dreaming about what makes a difference from the traditional status quo. I am always looking for trends that could be liked and appreciated by the consumer. My quest is always what’s next.

Finally, creative designers who are able to express themselves through their work can be particularly inspiring to others. Whether through the use of color, shape, or texture, designers can convey their unique perspectives and points of view through their work and inspire others to do the same.

What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs?

Starting a business is not easy, it will likely take time and persistence to gain traction and build a loyal customer base. Be patient, stay focused on your goals and be willing to adapt and iterate as you learn more about the market and your customers.
